New MOBLOG!

Friday, December 30th, 2005

So finally, after having Gallery 2 on my server for a while, I decided to get on the moblog bandwagon. I invite you to take advantage of my mobile blogging as I travel around the country for work at http://www.brw.net/gallery/v/Moblog/. You can BET that will be updated more frequently than this text stuff!

Other than that, today was relatively boring. Yet another test server not cooperating, yet another room in the house cleaned. This time, THE OFFICE! Oh man, you would not recognize it MOM & DAD if you saw it now. You will ogle my new closet space and wonder what I did with everything. Well… some of it is out in the trash can. Three bags worth. I actually have a full shelf and a half of space in my bookcase to put stuff! W00t on that!

Oh, congrats to Angie & Brent on the birth of their new baby!

So anyway, we’re preparing for a very small party at the house tomorrow. It’s good that it is small. I think we may have Mom & Dad host New Years for awhile. We’ve got SuperBowl & 4th of July. :) I hope you all enjoy your days tomorrow!

Chicago, much fun

Friday, December 16th, 2005

So this past week, James & I were hitting the Chi-Town scene to get some client work done. After talking to many different residents, we figure we did OK as far as things to do. We arrived in the late afternoon on Monday and fought traffic to get downtown from Orchard Field. Took us a little over an hour. Was not too terribly big as I was on a conference call for the first part, and James was on one for the last part.

That night, Aunt Niece and Uncle Mike picked us up and took us to dinner. They took us to the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co., and it was absolutely fantabulous. I think one of the coolest things for me was telling Mom & Dad that’s where they went, and their faces lit up and knew exactly where we went, and what cool things there were to eat there. If you are ever in Chicago, I HIGHLY recommend it. The “upside-down” pizzas rule.

After dinner, we got dropped off on Division street and commenced to hit a couple of bars. We were really looking for a sports bar to watch the game at, so not much bar hopping that night. We started at this “irish” place called Finn McCool’s. Note the double quotes around the word irish. It was advertised as such, but we should have known something was fishy when figure skating was playing on more than one of their big televisions. The only irish beer on tap was Guinness (Ok.. ok… it is the staple, but there ARE others). When I asked the waitress what other beers they had on tap she responded, “Well, we do have Miller Lite.” Ugh… I’ve been to Ireland, and while they may be slightly misguided and have Budweiser on tap, I never once saw Miller Lite on tap. We both had 1 beer and bolted.

The next stop was across the street and called The Lodge. Definitely much better. We watched the rest of the game (most of it anyway) there and then headed back to the hotel.

The next day we hit Michigan Avenue. The cabbie dropped us off at Nordstroms and we walked for a bit. Michigan Avenue is all lit up during this time of year, which kind of helps you forget about the cold, but not really. Jeebus it was cold. After wandering around there and hitting the North Face store, we hit Giordano’s which I still have problems saying. It was not planned, we were just wandering and saw the pretty neon signs. Quite a tasty dinner!

Next we did the bar hopping. First, we blew the wad at The Signature Lounge where James informed me that was the highest he had ever been in a building. We drank to that, but only once because each drink was about 12.50. Ouch.

Next we were off to Clark & Grand to hit many places. We started at Fado’s which is a place we hit many times in Austin. Great beer, good crowd and nice architecture. After one beer we walked about 5 blocks to the Stop & Drink. Cool name, great beer :) Finally, we walked across the street to Celtic Crossings, another irish bar. Very nice and great beer. Then we cabbed it home for the night.

On the grand finale wednesday night, we had some work folks that we hung out with. We started at a place called Scoozi, a wine bar on Huron. We simply drank there because the next place we were going was dinner, and it was fantabulous. For dinner, we hit Tavern on Rush, similar to a Del Frisco’s. Wow diddlefarkin wow. So amazing.

After that, Glenn, James & I hit a place near to Glenn’s home called the Corner Pocket. It was packed in there thanks to a holiday party, but we had a few beers and enjoyed playing pool. Then we cabbed it home to hit one last morning of client meetings. We got out early and tried to catch an earlier flight back to Dallas, but simply ended up sitting at O’Hare for 6 hours. whee.

So anyway… that was the fun! Highly recommend all the places above that got a positive review!

Brando goes to Indy!

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

Hey folks! Finally got to enjoy my Dad’s day present which was Monday Night Football tickets to Indy & Pitt! Wow, what a LOUD stadium. SUCH an amazing game. Here are the pix!

Pictures of the game!

Golden is GOLDEN!

Tuesday, November 8th, 2005

Welp, James & I just got back from a long day of work. We did find a way to get into the Coors Brewery for a quick tour though. Got Springfield some coasters as well. So far, we’ve been kicking ass up here, and I’m ready for travel to Providence tomorrow.

Found some great office space for rent in downtown Golden, wonder if I could convince work to get an office there? It would TOTALLY not suck.

James is sitting across from me, and definitely NOT blogging, but he gets to go home early, so I know he is jazzed. He’ll be gone most of next week as well.

I’ve got papers to grade, so I’ll chat later.

Happy Birthday to me!

wheee!

Spam is a beating.

Tuesday, November 1st, 2005

The thing is, Spam is not limited to email anymore, and that really hacks me off. Thankfully, I’ve installed a newer version of blog software that helps quell out a ton of that spam. Unfortunately, that does not prevent my logs from filling up with that crap. I’ve got to get a good stat software setup so I can start rotating these logs out.

Halloween was pretty good last night! We only had about half of the kids that we used to get in McKinney. It was definitely our first, and I get the feeling that our street is not known for shelling out the best candy ever. We still have about a bag left, and we were giving out handfuls. Usually 4-7 pieces per kid. Well, except for the one kid who showed up without a costume and his hand out. He got one, and I gave extra to his pals. Greatness…

Yesterday (on and off until it was working) I got a bunch of new Debian packages put together for our team. I learned a shit-ton about dpkg again, and am starting to feel very comfortable building binary, kernel & non-binary packages for distribution to our team. They are not the prettiest in the world, but they work, and I try to keep them compliant with the Debian Policy manual as much as can be allowed (I violated it with one package, but it’s not too bad. Saves me from manually patching kernel drivers with every release).

We had to get a new garage door opener. The spring needed a little tensioning and the track needed to be lubed. Once I got all that going and correctly installed a couple of bracing bolts (and paid the bill for the guy who came out and lubed it up), we’re rocking and rolling again. So nice to have things that work well.

At any rate, I’m going to head out to lunch now (and try to figure out why my Treo is screwed up again).

Computers… ahh they’re fun

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

The past three days, James’s laptop has been all farked up bad kitty. Normally, that would not be something that affects me, aside from hearing the story. But this week, it has been a bitch. I think we finally got most of his issues fixed, and I’ve had to retrofit mine a bit to hopefully prevent something like that happening to mine. Getting ready for travel next week as well.

Welp, I’m off to watch Family Guy and then sleep. Going to try and make tomorrow SUPER productive.

Ahh the lovely techology fun

Monday, September 26th, 2005

Went nuts yesterday. Got WPA going on my wireless. What? I was not WPA prior to yesterday? Yeh, I was. I was doing the WPA-PSK deal. Nice fat dictionary word to do it for me. Now, I’m going WPA EAP-TTLS, with certs & usernames/passwords. Too much? Probably. But the good news is I got it working with freeware tools and I have the experience in doing it!

Next project on the list is replacing Sphinx. He has served me well, but he is getting REALLY slow. Takes about 20 minutes to compile a firewall ruleset. I’m moving solid state. CF storage! The only moving parts in the box will be the fans that cool it. I hope to get all that loot over the next week so I can get going!

At any rate, that’s the techie in me signing out. Got travel tomorrow & thursday to worry about.

Fokker out!

Chillin on Sunday

Sunday, September 18th, 2005

Getting ready to go out of town for business today (that part sucks), but right now we’re enjoying it. Got the games going and watching Indy struggle.

Was in Pittsburgh this week, and had the first aborted landing. We’re in an MD-80 and its night time, flying in and about 200 ft over the runway/ground. All the sudden, I hear the pilot shove the throttles to the stops (so much so that the plane started shaking a little from the added power of them SUPER engines), nose up struggling to gain altitude, and gear up. Pass over the runway. Apparently, the OTHER flight that got in that hour was still on the runway. If you have been to the Pittsuburgh airport lately, you probably don’t understand. Almost 100 gates, and at 9pm the whole place was closed and boarded up.

So that was fun. Headed to Austin this week. Oh and congrats to my son Garrett for winning the football pool last week! His tried and true method of picking the prettiest helmet to him and sticking it in his mouth seems to be beating everyone’s systems. Yes, that means better than Gail’s spreadsheets, better than Trav’s “How many Aggies are on the team” method, and definitely better than whatever method Dad still uses. Dad would do so much better if he would make his picks, then choose the opposite team. Greatness.

So anyway…. out for a few days. Catch ya on the flip side.

Oh and check out this crazy video of my kid laughing at a cup. (Sorry about the broken link)

Why can’t hotels get the eggs right?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Yet another hotel, yet another bad plate of eggs. Is it possible for the keeper of the scrambled eggs recipe to take some feedback and fix the soup? Now that you mention it, it should be renamed to egg soup. I spose not all is lost, however. I do get to eat lots of MEAT while trying to salvage breakfast! Oh… and if Chris is reading, I’m eating a nice big plate of fruit right now.

Things are nuts up here. People have fled Katrina and are coming in this far north. The hotel staff here is ill equipped to deal with something like this and they are running around like crazy. I learned my lesson. When natural disaster strikes, check in early!

At any rate, we are settled for the few days we are here and I really can’t complain. Well, except about the eggs.

What a party!

Sunday, August 14th, 2005

So yesterday we went off to Grapevine to hang out with my buddy Randy who just got his MS from UD this past weekend. Congrats to him! They decided to have a huge block party blowout and also had a benefit for Tuberous Sclerosis. Zack King was set up next door and they had the tunes rocking! The party organizers also had a raffle and donation box to which they received over $4300 in donations to benefit Tuberous Sclerosis!

Did we win anything? Hells yeah! We won a free weekend rental of a margarita machine! HOLY CRAP! Margaritas from Friday-Sunday! Man, it’s going to be a brain-cell killing weekend sometime soon! We’ll let you all know so you can come by.

On a techie geeky front, I added some functionality to the weather page. You can now see the times that the max/min observations occurred by moving your mouse over the values. Neat huh? :)

Home office? What?

Monday, August 8th, 2005

Yeah…. that’s what it has been like over the last three weeks. Luckily, most of it was local, but I have basically been away for three straight weeks. I’ve gotten some work done this weekend and today. 3 weeks of crap tends to pile up pretty fast!

We’re getting the football pool up and running pretty quickly here. Watched A J Feeley get an ass-bruise today. They called it a Left Gluteus Contusion. I say ass-bruise. Garrett is going to play this year! Going to put the teams in front of him and see who he likes. I bet he does not come in last place!

We sure got some rain today. A quick .89″ of rain fell over about 30 minutes. We need it, but we need MUCH more. Weather channel says that more is coming, but not anything consistent. I sure hope our bushes come back.

A bit of sad news today, Peter Jennings died. I really liked him. Of all of the national newscasters (well except for Connie Chung… where’d that hottie go?), he was the only one I really liked. Tom Brokaw is kind of funny to listen to, but man the hack of the hells (lack of Ls) really gets on my nerves. Never liked Dan Rather, especially with the recent events. Wolf Blitzer and Paula Zahn? Please. Peter Jennings was the calming voice for me. Sad day for broadcasting for sure.

James came up for the weekend! I certainly hope we can get him up here for the long term pretty quickly. I know his family would like that, and Garrett needs his uncle!

Well, tomorrow is back to the real world again!

Time for some lake fun.

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

It’s been a busy week. Down to Austin for a couple of days, here for a while, St. Paul & Vegas in a week or so. I hope to make platinum soon!

Class is almost over! We have 2 more classes for the live class, 2 weeks for the online, and I’m ready to be done (just as much as the students are). It’s been a busy semester, and I can use the break. It is difficult to be on this side of the table as well I am finding.

Tomorrow, we are heading down to the lake for the weekend. Man I am looking forward to it. I will be enjoying not only the break from the mundane, but also the water. Hopefully the lake will be very calm early in the mornings so I can get some nice glassy surfaces for skiing. :)

Time to go to sleep now, been working enough on different things and I’m exhausted!

OK, so where have I been?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

Yeah, it’s been busy. Here’s a quick update on what has been going on.

We had a HUGE party on the 2nd of July to celebrate the independence of our fine country, and had over 40 people come. Wow! By far the biggest one we have had thus far, and the food was amazing. Over 35 pounds of meat was consumed! We had a 10lb brisket that was skillfully carved by Lee, 6 racks of ribs, that Russ chopped up, 60 bacon wrapped shrimp (those guys went fast), and various kinds of sausage from venison to pork. We also had some stuffed jalepenos that went VERY fast. Wow. Heart attacks for all.

I also bought a fresh keg for the party on Monday. It had MAYBE a case pulled off. Well the keg blew about 9pm. What a great job!

Also, I had some well needed and deserved vacation time. We did not go anywhere, but I got to stay home and enjoy not working. No major issues happened, and I’m now back to the grindstone.

I’ll write some more later, but for now, this is all you get!

New Studio Pix!

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

Garrett is 3 months old! Well he was a while back. Anyway, we added some pictures to the studio album shots.

Garrett 3-months.

BACK!

Saturday, June 11th, 2005

Wow, what a trip. All of the pictures are up in the gallery at http://www.brw.net/gallery/ireland05. Enjoy! Thanks again to Michelle for showing me a great time on Wednesday. Go Tim Freedman from The Whitlams!

We got to see Eric, Erin and their newest, Jack! Erin looked very sleepy (as to be understood), but Jack looks so cute! Baby Garrett cannot wait for his play pal to come visit!

The return trip was long and frustrating. I fargin hate Chicago O’Hare with a passion. Because of the antics of O’Hare, and poor planning by American Airlines, my flight was delayed over 3 hours. I did not get home until nearly 10pm… had to cancel class. I felt very bad as I wanted to give the students a review, but they will have to do it on their own. I’m off to Austin later this coming week, so James & I will have to have safe fun. Then he is coming up this weekend.

On that note, I’m going to run for the moment. The rest of the crew came back from Hawaii today, and I just ran into the parents for a few minutes. Thanks for the pineapple!

On to stop number 2

Monday, June 6th, 2005

Welp, I’ve arrived at the second and final stop in Ireland. I’m in Wicklow at the Druids Glen. Wow, this place is amazing. I’m definitely out in the country.

Heh, for some reason around here the first floor is really the second. Let me explain. The floor on the ground is the Ground floor, the one right above it is the First floor, and so on. Caused me confusion at both hotels. This one was even weirder though, because I am on the First floor, but that is really the 3rd floor (actually the 4th) per the elevator. Much confusion, but I figured it out and made my way.

So now I’m going to do some work for a bit. I’ve considered going and getting a massage, but I am not sure yet. Real big client work starts tomorrow, so I’ve got to spend time and prepare.

Ireland, Day 1

Monday, June 6th, 2005

Well I did make it. Yesterday was a very long day. I was able to grab about 3 hours of sleep on the plane on the way over, and that was all. The seat was not very comfortable for one, and I kept getting hot. Oh, and it turns out I was sitting next to a PhD from California that graduated from Duncanville! Can you believe that? I think she said she was class of ‘79.

Once I got to the hotel here (took public transport for 2 Euro), I showered and had lunch, then it was time to have some fun! I took a bus into town (bout 45 mins) and then changed to a tour bus. You pay like 10 Euro and the ticket is good for 24 hours. Hop on, hop off. I did the Guinness Storehouse tour and also the Jameson Distillery Tour. Both were very cool and ended in free beverages! Man, the Guinness here DOES taste different! Though I will add, not everywhere. The Guinness at this hotel tastes like the states.

On the way back to the hotel, I took public transport and I was SCREWED! Why? Not because I could not get a bus, but because there was some sporting event that had just gotten out and 82,000 people flooded the streets. Not only did we have to weed through all of that in a double decker bus, but we also picked up almost 100 of those guys along the way. Bus ride took me 1.5 hours to get home. Only cost me 2 Euro, but I should have taken a taxi.

I am working on posting pictures from day one right now. I’ll be wrapping things up here in Swords today and then heading down to Wicklow by the afternoon. Will post more then!

Fun swim pictures!

Friday, June 3rd, 2005

Here ya go :)

Baby Garrett’s First Swim!

Day off!

Friday, June 3rd, 2005

Man, what a great time for a breather! Actually I realized that I was not accruing vacation days anymore and I had maxxed out. So I decided to take a day now, some later, and many more later as well. It is so far working out quite well!

We took the kiddo for his first swim today! Be looking for pictures on his gallery soon. Also, everyone has left us for Hawaii now. Well, everyone on my side anyway. I picked up Ash’s car from the aeropuerto today (oh Ash, btw… Spell phonetically when saying Terminal C, level 21 D next time… would be helpful :) Thanks for the early fathers day gift!) and they are all landed by now. It promises to be a really amazing trip, and we both wish we could be a part of it. BUT! We are VERY happy we did not agree to go with the kiddo. We would not have enjoyed ourselves as much.

I’ve been pulling peppers off the plants! Up until today, we have had no Serrano peppers growing, but we do now! Just one, but that plant is ready to sprout many, many more! I’m preparing for my Dublin trip, and I will have many pictures for you! We got ourselves a little compact digicam so I don’t have to drag one of the SLRs over. I feel much better about it.

At any rate….. I’m going to go throw steaks on the grill now… More soon.
